In a year marked by substantial crop challenges, Uiseong County has initiated a support program to bolster local onion production. Designed to increase high-quality yields and farmer incomes, the project is aimed at overcoming significant damage to this year’s onion crop. Led by County Mayor Kim Ju-soo, this support package includes subsidies for onion production materials, eco-friendly soil treatments, and pest management solutions to enhance crop resilience and quality.
This program comes at a critical time, as Uiseong County experienced severe onion growth issues this year, with crop damage recognized as an agricultural disaster. The county reports 101 farms affected, covering 55 hectares of farmland. In response, the county has allocated 70 million KRW (approximately $52,000 USD) to assist 232 farms with essential onion production support, which includes high-quality onion-specific vinyl coverings, natural soil enhancers, and eco-friendly pesticides.

A key aspect of this program is the provision of onion-specific vinyl covers, which help create optimal growth conditions by managing soil temperature and reducing weed growth. These coverings protect soil health and promote healthier onion crops by shielding plants from extreme weather conditions—a critical factor given the erratic weather patterns this season.
Additionally, Uiseong farmers will receive eco-friendly soil amendments and pest control aids. This includes microbial growth stimulants to enhance soil fertility, which is crucial for optimal onion growth. These amendments aim to enrich the soil, providing a balanced environment for onions to thrive and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
