A Resilient Comeback
The Peruvian mango industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the 2024/25 season, bouncing back after a tough previous year marked by high temperatures and heavy rainfall. With the season running from August to March, normalized weather conditions have significantly improved flowering, boosting both export volumes and values.
According to estimates, Peru is on track to export between 200,000 and 230,000 tons of mangoes, generating a value of $290–310 million USD. This marks a dramatic improvement from the prior season, which suffered from a combination of reduced yields and logistical challenges.
Key Markets and Performance
The United States and Europe continue to dominate as the primary destinations for Peruvian mangoes. Despite increased competition from Mexico, the U.S. market saw an astounding 383% increase in export volume and a 208% rise in value, highlighting growing demand.
Europe also experienced substantial growth, with a 362% rise in export volume and a 114% increase in value. However, lower market prices in both regions have tempered the financial benefits of these gains.
Challenges Persist
While the recovery is encouraging, challenges remain for the Peruvian mango sector. Water scarcity continues to be a pressing concern for growers, with limited access to irrigation impacting long-term sustainability. Additionally, intense competition in global markets, particularly from Mexico and other Latin American producers, has driven prices down, reducing profit margins.
Technological Advancements and Sustainability
In response to these challenges, Peruvian exporters and growers are increasingly turning to technology. Precision agriculture, improved irrigation systems, and better post-harvest management are being implemented to enhance productivity and reduce waste. Investments in sustainable practices are also gaining traction, as consumers in key markets demand environmentally responsible produce.
The 2024/25 mango season in Peru stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the country’s agricultural sector. While the recovery in export volumes and values is promising, addressing water scarcity and market competition will be crucial for ensuring sustained growth. With continued innovation and focus on sustainability, Peru’s mango industry is well-positioned to maintain its place as a key player in the global market.
