Innovative Use of Natural Mineral-Based Fertilizers to Enhance Soil Fertility and Crop Yield

At the upcoming “Grain of Russia – 2025” forum, Dr. Anastasia Sergeevna Vasilkovskaya, an agricultural sciences candidate and General Director of LLC “STONEFERT,” will present her expert insights on the application of natural mineral-based fertilizers. Her focus will be on how these fertilizers can maintain soil fertility and improve both the yield and quality of agricultural crops.

The Environmental Impact of Traditional Fertilizers

Since their inception nearly two centuries ago, industrial fertilizers have revolutionized food production. However, the intensification of agriculture has led to adverse effects on the environment, climate, and the health of humans, animals, and soils. Notably, approximately 1.4% of global carbon dioxide emissions are attributed to fertilizer production, with their usage being a significant source of other greenhouse gases.

Balancing Food Security and Environmental Sustainability

The challenge facing scientists and agronomists today is ensuring food security for a growing population while minimizing agriculture’s negative impact on ecosystems. Completely eliminating fertilizers without compromising yields is unfeasible, as plants require between 17 to 40 essential nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. In recent years, there has been an increased demand for elements such as calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Historically, these were assumed to be sufficiently available in soils, but shifts in crop patterns and soil acidification from excessive nitrogen fertilizer use have led to deficiencies.

The Role of Natural Mineral-Based Fertilizers

To address these challenges, Dr. Vasilkovskaya advocates for the use of fertilizers derived from natural minerals. These fertilizers are rich in essential macro and micronutrients, including calcium, magnesium, silicon, iron, sulfur, and boron. Additionally, they contain humic, fulvic, and amino acids sourced from natural materials. Such compositions not only enhance crop yields but also improve soil structure, moisture retention, pH regulation, and plant resilience against diseases and pests.

Global Perspectives and Initiatives

The global agricultural community is increasingly recognizing the benefits of integrating natural mineral-based fertilizers. For instance, Anglo American has entered agreements to promote polyhalite—a mineral rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur—as a fertilizer in China. This initiative aims to enhance crop yields by 3-5% while offering a low-carbon, soil-friendly alternative to traditional fertilizers. Similarly, small cotton farmers in central India have transitioned to organic farming practices, utilizing natural composts and biopesticides to reduce costs and improve soil health.

The integration of natural mineral-based fertilizers presents a viable solution to the dual challenges of maintaining high agricultural productivity and ensuring environmental sustainability. By adopting these innovative practices, farmers can enhance soil fertility, boost crop yields, and contribute to a more sustainable agricultural future.
