The harvest of Mehina garlic, Hasankeyf’s first geographically certified agricultural product, has been completed in Batman province, Turkey. According to the district governor’s office, farmers in the Kayıklı village gathered the crop with the support of local officials, reinforcing efforts to promote this unique variety.
A Naturally Resilient Crop
Mehina garlic stands out for its low irrigation needs, relying solely on rainwater for growth. District Governor Mehmet Ali İmrak emphasized that despite this year’s drought-related production challenges, the government is providing seed subsidies to compensate farmers and ensure future yields.
“We believe Mehina garlic will soon gain nationwide recognition, just like other renowned Turkish garlic varieties,” İmrak stated.
Expanding Production and Market Reach
Zeki Kaplan, Director of Hasankeyf’s Agriculture and Forestry Department, highlighted that Mehina garlic received its geographical indication (GI) certification in 2024. The goal now is to increase cultivation areas while resolving market access issues to enhance profitability for farmers.
Globally, geographically certified products often see a 20-30% price premium due to their unique qualities and authenticity (FAO, 2023). With proper branding, Mehina garlic could tap into Turkey’s growing organic and specialty food market, valued at $350 million annually (Turkish Statistical Institute, 2024).
Mehina garlic represents a sustainable and high-potential crop for Hasankeyf farmers, combining drought resistance with market appeal. With continued government support and strategic marketing, it could become a key economic driver for the region.
