In Expo City Dubai, a unique organic farm beckons residents and guests to delve into the world of sustainable agriculture. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the intricacies of farming, tracing the path of environmentally friendly products “from sprout to table.”
The farm cultivates entirely organic food for humans and animals. Some varieties, such as alfalfa, millet, oats, and barley, serve as both livestock feed and soil protectors, shielding against mineral depletion.
Embracing bio-intensive farming, the plot, in coordination with Emirates Bio Farm, sequentially grows different crops, forming a natural barrier against pests through companion planting.
The farm employs biochar, a special form of organic wood waste burned without oxygen, reducing carbon emissions. This material, akin to wood charcoal, enhances soil moisture retention and agricultural productivity.
Desert plants, requiring significantly less water due to their adaptation to arid conditions, flourish on the farm. Medicinal herbs like Italian cassia and Lawsonia inermis also find a home here.
A popular practice for small spaces is indoor hydroponic farming. A vertical hydroponic farm kiosk at Expo City Farm produces 15 kg of produce annually using only water. The recirculating water system reduces consumption by 95%, powered by solar energy through the Air Joule system.
Connected to the hydroponic room is the Air Joule system, extracting water from the air, running solely on solar power.
Used coffee grounds from nearby restaurants in the Expo City area contribute to mushroom cultivation. The thermostat controls the growth of lion’s mane, shiitake, and chestnut mushrooms.
The farm hosts seminars and culinary workshops to disseminate information about the cultivated plants and educate people on their utilization.
Expo City Dubai’s organic farm exemplifies a sustainable agricultural paradigm, incorporating diverse techniques to minimize environmental impact and maximize productivity. From bio-intensive farming to hydroponics, the farm sets a precedent for the future of agriculture, emphasizing resource efficiency and ecological integrity.
