In a remarkable development reported by the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the exports of processed vegetables and fruits reached a historic high of over $1.1 billion by the end of November 2023, reflecting a substantial 19% increase compared to the previous year. This surge is a testament to Vietnam’s growing influence in the global agricultural market.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), processed products constituted 21% of Vietnam’s total vegetable and fruit exports during this period. Notably, these products have gained immense popularity in key markets such as the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South Korea. Sales of mango, passion fruit, almond, and pistachio-based products witnessed an impressive year-on-year growth ranging from 22% to 60% in 2023.

Canned fruits and bottled juices emerged as favored products, particularly in Japanese, American, and European markets, contributing significantly to the overall export success. Dang Phuc Nguyen, the secretary-general of VINAFRUIT, attributed the sharp increase in exports to the rising demand from major markets, highlighting the consistent growth of 30-45% per year in the last three years, as reported by the United States International Trade Commission.

Europe, too, experienced a substantial increase in processed product imports from Vietnam, with annual growth rates ranging from 10% to 20% over the past three years. The recent approval from China to allow Vietnam to export processed and frozen fruits, in addition to fresh ones, has further propelled the country’s processed vegetable and fruit exports.

However, challenges remain as only 14% of Vietnam’s annual fruit production undergoes processing, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. While efforts are underway to upgrade vegetable and fruit processing plants, their current scale falls short of meeting the surging global demand. Nevertheless, the robust growth in exports underscores Vietnam’s pivotal role in the international agricultural landscape.

Vietnam’s agricultural sector has witnessed a phenomenal achievement with processed vegetable and fruit exports exceeding $1.1 billion in 2023. The notable increase in sales to major markets and the endorsement from China for processed and frozen fruit exports showcase Vietnam’s growing influence in the global agricultural trade. However, addressing the challenge of limited processing capacity is crucial to fully capitalize on the escalating demand.
