This year, agricultural producers in Irkutsk Region have significantly expanded the acreage dedicated to cabbage cultivation by 28.3 hectares, reaching a total of 353.3 hectares, as reported by the regional government. Farmers have planted between 28,000 to 55,000 cabbage plants per hectare, showcasing a robust commitment to increasing vegetable production.
The expansion of cabbage cultivation has been made possible through a government program aimed at stimulating the production of potatoes and vegetables in the Priangarye region. This initiative provides partial compensation to farmers for production costs, serving as a powerful incentive for sectoral growth.
Ilya Sumarokov, the Minister of Agriculture of Irkutsk Region, emphasized that developing vegetable production, including cabbage, is a key priority in ensuring food security not only locally but across the country. This strategic focus aims to enhance self-sufficiency and reduce dependency on external food supplies.
With favorable weather conditions, farmers anticipate harvesting 10.7 thousand tons of cabbage this autumn, marking an increase of 400 tons compared to last year’s yield. Cabbage is cultivated across 10 districts in Irkutsk Region, with Irkutsk District leading in production volume.
The expansion of cabbage cultivation in Irkutsk Region reflects proactive efforts by farmers and government support to strengthen agricultural output and food security. As the sector continues to grow, sustained investments in agricultural programs and favorable policies will be crucial to sustaining this positive trajectory.
