The food packaging market in Russia may increase by 25-30% to 1.5-1.6 trillion rubles by 2025. At the same time, the share of eco-friendly packaging can be up to 50%, according to the experts of the company “Interagro”.
In 2022, the market volume exceeded 1.2 trillion rubles.
The authors of the study named vegetable growing both open and closed ground as one of the drivers of the growth of packaging production.
Experts remind that in 2010-2022, vegetable harvesting in Russia grew by an average of 5.3% per year, including 8-10% in 2015-2019. This stimulated the development of the packaging market in this area. At the same time, the growth rate slowed to 4% in 2022. But this will also stimulate an increase in the use of packaging.
“Against this background, Russian manufacturers no longer count on extensive production growth. In conditions of stagnant demand, they need to work on expanding the range and increasing profitability, in these conditions, effective delivery of products to the consumer, innovative high-quality packaging solutions will play a primary role,” the study says.
According to Ekaterina Babayeva, CEO of Interagro, whose opinion is given in the study, the right packaging helps to bring a quality product to the buyer: “However, today it has turned into an effective marketing tool and gives the manufacturer the opportunity to make his brand recognizable, bring a wide range to the market at different prices.”
According to Interagro, in 2022 the Russian market of food polymer packaging amounted to 763 thousand tons against 751 thousand tons in 2021. Over the past five years, the average annual growth rate of the market has been 3%.
According to experts, in the coming years, the demand for packaged products will continue, including products in packaging with improved characteristics. Retail-ready boxes and rigid plastic containers will be the fastest growing segments of the vegetable packaging market in the medium term. The demand for appropriate packaging will support the popularity of ready-to-eat vegetables and salads, the study says.
Interagro also reports that the geography of packaging production has been expanding recently. With the departure of foreign manufacturers, their niche is beginning to be occupied by domestic ones, which are increasing production against the background of growing demand. “According to the results of a survey conducted by the Bank of Russia in July 2022, the majority of packaging manufacturers of the Southern Federal District reported an increase in production volumes, including large manufacturers of paper packaging and foil cardboard of the Volgograd region, tin containers of the Crimea,” the study says.
In 2022, the trend for the production of eco-friendly packaging accelerated. By 2025, its share may reach up to 50% of the total production volume, which corresponds to the global trend. Referring to the data of the marketing agency Fact.MR the authors of the study report that by 2032, the volume of the global market for eco-friendly food packaging will reach $380 billion against $190 billion in 2022.
