In the heart of Sui Ning county’s Shuang Gou town, post the Minor Snow festival, the vibrant hues of ripe tomatoes in Chen Wang village’s vegetable greenhouses illuminate the joy on the faces of local farmers. Cao Shu Ying, a 55-year-old villager, proudly declares that her tomatoes, nurtured by the waters of the Yellow River, have become a local delicacy, yielding over 9,000 kilograms this season alone. With a rough estimate, a single greenhouse can generate an annual income exceeding ¥100,000.
Chen Wang village, located on the northeast side of Shuang Gou town, faced agricultural challenges due to severe soil alkalization along the banks of the Yellow River. However, comprehensive development initiatives since 2012 have transformed the area. The former reliance on reed weaving along the Yellow River has given way to a 1,200-acre greenhouse vegetable base, harnessing the benefits of the revitalized Yellow River.
Miao Cai Feng, a local farmer in her cucumber greenhouse, witnesses lush vines hanging high and vibrant green cucumbers ready for harvest. Visitors like Zhu Qing Lu, a merchant from Huai Bei, acknowledge the quality of vegetables grown using Yellow River water and organic fertilizers, branding them as genuinely green, pollution-free produce that commands a good market price.
In 2016, with support from the Shuang Gou town government, Chen Wang village established a vegetable trading market and cold storage. Presently, the market transports an average of 60,000 to 70,000 kilograms of vegetables daily, reaching over a hundred thousand kilograms during peak seasons. In 2018, the village’s greenhouse vegetable base received recognition as a “Shanghai Outsourcing Vegetable Production Base.”
The widespread adoption of greenhouse vegetable cultivation in Chen Wang village not only enriches local farmers but also influences more than 800 households in neighboring villages like Wei Lin and Shuang Dong, contributing to an annual income increase of over ¥20 million. The establishment of a vegetable trading market has provided employment opportunities for the elderly, allowing them to earn a comfortable living while staying close to home.
Wang Nan, the Party Secretary of Shuang Gou town, emphasizes leveraging the ecological advantages of the Yellow River’s ecological corridor. The focus is on promoting specialty crops such as melons, distinctive vegetables, and lotus roots. By encouraging locals to produce “local specialties” according to the region’s conditions, the town aims to continually broaden avenues for increased income, thereby activating the “new engine” of rural revitalization.
The success story of Chen Wang village serves as a testament to the transformative power of innovative agricultural practices. The integration of eco-friendly techniques, water resource utilization, and market-oriented strategies not only revitalized the soil but also empowered local communities.
