An important step in the development of agricultural innovations was that Ivan Geletey’s farm near Borovichi became a pioneer in the use of liquid complex fertilizers (LCF) when planting potatoes. This initiative, supported by the Minister of Agriculture of the Novgorod Region Viktor Vitvitsky, promises to optimize planting processes and increase crop yields.
The farm of Ivan Geletey, which has been the main one in the Voloksky rural settlement of the Borovichi district for more than 30 years, is famous for growing various vegetables, melons, root crops and tubers. This year, the farm has already sown 40 hectares of potatoes and six hectares of other vegetables, with plans to expand to 135 hectares of potatoes and 35 hectares of vegetables.
Minister Vitvitsky, who recently visited the farm, expressed confidence in the success of the new methods. “Ivan Ivanovich devoted more than 40 years to agriculture in the Novgorod region. His farm uses the latest agricultural technologies and modern equipment. Favorable weather conditions are an added advantage and I am confident that the goals set will not only be achieved, but exceeded,” he said.
The Geletey farm, one of the largest and most stable enterprises in the Novgorod region, occupied 250 hectares last year. Of these, 135 hectares of potatoes, 45 hectares of vegetables and 70 hectares of perennial herbs. The farm’s output was impressive: 4,645 tons of potatoes and 1,877 tons of vegetables were harvested. The products are sold in hardware stores in Borovichi, as well as through cooperation with large federal retail chains such as Pyaterochka, Lenta, Okay. The farm also has a workshop for the primary and pre-sale preparation of potatoes and vegetables with a capacity of up to 5,000 tons and an annual turnover of 15,000 tons.
In accordance with the regional priority project “Development of seed potatoes” in the Novgorod region, the share of locally produced highly reproductive potato seeds has increased, reaching 40.3% in 2023. The region accounts for 12% of seed potato production in Russia. . Since 2016, the Geletey farm has been engaged in the primary production of seed potatoes on a virus-free basis, annually growing mini-tubers from healthy plants in vitro in pots with an artificial peat substrate. In 2023, the farm produced 52.6 thousand minitubers of the Sadon potato variety and 1.910 tons of high reproduction seeds.
The farm’s commitment to modern farming methods is evident in the use of advanced technologies and fertilizers. Geletey’s active participation in seminars and conferences allows the farm to remain at the forefront of agricultural innovation. Ivan Geletey, an honorary citizen of the Novgorod region, is highly respected among regional specialists and leaders, and his contribution extends not only to agriculture, but also to supporting his employees, veterans and retirees. His achievements have been recognized by numerous state, departmental and regional awards.
Recent progress on the Geletey farm coincides with wider regional developments, such as the opening of a new Potato Seed Center in the Novgorod region. Last year, the region became the Northwestern Federal District’s leader in potato production per capita, strengthening its key role in Russian agriculture.
The introduction of liquid complex fertilizers on the Geletey farm marks a new chapter in the development of agriculture in the region. This innovation is designed to improve efficiency and yield, highlighting the importance of continuous technological progress in farming methods.
