During the New Year holidays, there was a traditional rise in price in Russian stores.
The vegetables of the borscht set were no exception. According to Rosstat, from January 1 to January 9, the cost of vegetables on average rose by 6.5%. Cucumbers rose the most – by 12.87%. Tomatoes – by 13.01%.
Chairman of the Presidium of the Association of Retail Companies (ACORT) Igor Karavaev in an interview with RIA Novosti recalled that such vegetables are now grown only in greenhouses. The costs of providing a temperature regime are growing. Prices, respectively, too. “Plus the seasonal factor. Cucumbers and tomatoes traditionally become more expensive until February-March, then prices begin to decline,” the expert added.
Stores usually try to make minimum margins on vegetables of the borscht set. Although the purchase prices have increased markedly.
“At the beginning of January, federal chains kept retail prices lower than purchase prices for a number of products: for example, the negative margin on onions is minus 12.36%, potatoes – minus 12.59%, carrots – minus 22.23%, sunflower oil – minus 4.23% broiler carcass – minus 4.7%,” the head of ACORT said.
In conclusion, Karavaev predicted that in February-March prices for a certain group of goods will fall.
