Krasnodar Krai, a region in Russia, plans to significantly boost the proportion of locally produced sugar beet seeds in the upcoming 2024 season. Vice Governor Andrey Korobka announced during the XXIII Agricultural Exhibition “Golden Field” that the region aims to increase the share of local seed varieties to 50%. This decision follows a successful initiative in 2022, where the region collected parent forms of hybrids and sowed them across 240 hectares. The local seed station in Pervomayskaya played a vital role in this endeavor. With the expertise of specialists in the Belorechensk plant, the seeds are expected to exhibit quality on par with imported varieties. The anticipated increase in seed production will enable Krasnodar Krai to cultivate 90,000 to 100,000 hectares of sugar beet fields next year, representing half of the total area. This ambitious goal aligns with the Russian breeders’ objective to achieve a 50% share of domestic sugar beet seeds in agricultural practices by 2030.

Krasnodar Krai has taken significant steps towards enhancing its sugar beet seed production. In the previous year, the region made a strategic decision to gather all available resources from the Pervomayskaya seed station and collect parent forms of hybrids. These efforts were complemented by the successful sowing of the collected seeds across 240 hectares, demonstrating promising seedling emergence during the spring season. By August, the region anticipates collecting seeds of Krasnodar Krai’s own selection. This comprehensive approach is expected to result in a substantial increase in seed availability, allowing for the sowing of 90,000 to 100,000 hectares of sugar beet fields in the following year.

The consequences of Krasnodar Krai’s initiative to increase the share of local sugar beet seeds are multifaceted. Firstly, it will contribute to the regional economy by reducing reliance on imported seeds and fostering the growth of the local seed industry. By producing high-quality seeds that are comparable to foreign varieties, the region can ensure a sustainable and self-sufficient supply for its agricultural sector. Additionally, this development will positively impact crop yields, as locally adapted seed varieties tend to perform better in their respective environments. As a result, Krasnodar Krai aims to achieve a significant increase in the cultivation of sugar beets, potentially becoming a major supplier of this essential crop.

Overall, Krasnodar Krai’s efforts to increase the share of locally produced sugar beet seeds represent a significant step towards achieving self-sufficiency and promoting agricultural development in the region. By prioritizing seed production and enhancing its capabilities, the region aims to establish a strong foundation for sustainable agriculture while contributing to the broader goal of elevating the domestic share of sugar beet seeds in Russia.
