Moc Chau’s strawberry revolution: the path to sustainable success

Moc Chau, located in Son La province, is one of the top three strawberry growing regions in Vietnam, with more than 120 hectares of land dedicated to the fruit. With yields reaching around 1,800 tonnes per harvest cycle, farmers are currently experiencing a busy harvest season. According to local growers, strawberries are usually planted around October each year, and harvesting begins from late December of the previous year until mid-April of the following year. However, the period from January to March is considered the best time for the most delicious and high-quality berries.

With an average selling price of around VND 200,000 per kilogram, many households earn significant income, sometimes exceeding VND 1 billion per hectare per year, from strawberry cultivation. Nguyen Thi Hoa, director of the Agricultural Technical Center in Moc Chau District, emphasizes that Moc Chau strawberries are famous for their delicious taste and aroma, primarily supplied to markets in Hanoi and the northern provinces.

Driven by the idea of integrating strawberry farming with production and market linkages, as well as the use of high technology in agriculture, Son La’s agricultural sector promotes sustainable practices. This includes following VietGAP standards, organic farming and food safety regulations, and judicious use of pesticides. Technical Support Centers actively disseminate production instructions and train farmers on the correct use of crop protection products, building consumer confidence and confidence in the safety and quality of strawberries.

The Son La Department of Science and Technology is currently in the process of registering and securing the certification of the Son La Strawberry trademark under intellectual property laws. Once registered, this certificate will enhance the competitiveness and value of Son La strawberries, allowing them to participate in value chains and gradually increase the income of local producers and businesses involved in the production and trade of strawberries.

The registration and protection of intellectual property rights, coupled with the introduction of sustainable farming practices, represents a significant step forward for the strawberry industry in Moc Chau. By ensuring quality, safety and brand recognition, Moc Chau strawberries are poised for sustained success in both domestic and international markets.
