In recent years, Chile’s raspberry industry, once a leading force in global production, has faced notable declines. Since 2018, Chile’s output has dropped from 36,162 tons to just 16,083 tons in 2023, highlighting a major shift in the market. As this production gap widens, experts see a promising chance for Peru to step into the spotlight. With suitable agronomic conditions and a growing global appetite for raspberries, Peru could emerge as a key player in meeting international demand.
Agricultural engineer Alfonso Velásquez highlights that Peru’s untapped potential for raspberry production could be transformative. “Our country has yet to fully explore the potential of several crops, with raspberries being one of the most promising,” says Velásquez. He points out that Peru’s ideal climate and geographical diversity make it highly suitable for producing high-quality raspberries that can meet market standards for taste and shelf-life, both crucial factors for export viability.
The international demand for raspberries continues to grow, especially in large consumer markets such as the United States and Europe. These regions seek dependable sources due to rising consumer interest in healthy, fresh produce. Peru’s strategic location and established trade relationships with both North America and Europe could facilitate efficient exports, making it a viable alternative to other suppliers.
Velásquez suggests that for Peru to capitalize on this opportunity, it will need to focus on investment in infrastructure, technological improvements, and compliance with global food safety standards. Peru’s agribusiness sector has already proven its capacity for producing and exporting a variety of fruits, including blueberries and avocados, making raspberries a natural extension.
Chile’s declining raspberry production opens a significant opportunity for Peru, which has the agronomic advantages and market access to become a leading raspberry exporter. As demand for this fruit continues to rise, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, Peru’s agricultural sector can leverage this window to establish itself in the raspberry market. Investment in this sector could bring substantial benefits to Peru’s economy and contribute to diversifying its agricultural exports.
