In November 2024, Peru’s fig export market experienced a significant boost, doubling its volume from the previous year to a total of 549 tons. This surge marks a substantial increase, reflecting the country’s growing presence in the international fig market. According to the latest report, these exports were distributed across 15 countries, with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom as the primary destinations, each receiving 49% and 20% of the shipments, respectively.
Exportadora Frutícola del Sur S.A. and Fundo la Kiarita S.A.C. emerged as the leading exporters, accounting for 88% and 7% of the total exports. The remaining 55 buyers in the market represent a diverse customer base, underscoring the broad appeal of Peruvian figs. This increase in exports can be attributed to a combination of factors, including favorable weather conditions that enhanced crop yield, improved pest and disease management, and targeted marketing strategies to expand consumer reach.
The growth in fig exports also reflects Peru’s strategic focus on quality and consistency, with emphasis on meeting international standards for food safety and product quality. These efforts have helped Peruvian figs gain acceptance in competitive markets like the EU and the UK, where demand for high-quality, fresh produce continues to rise. The increased production volume has been supported by better irrigation techniques and the adoption of advanced agricultural practices, enabling farmers to achieve higher yields and maintain fruit quality.
The significant rise in fig exports from Peru demonstrates the country’s capacity to compete on a global scale. As other markets continue to tighten regulations on quality and sustainability, Peru’s focus on quality assurance and market diversification is positioning it as a key player in the global fig trade. However, challenges remain, particularly in maintaining product quality under varying weather conditions and ensuring stable supply chains.
The doubling of Peru’s fig exports in November 2024 reflects a successful alignment of production strategies, quality control measures, and targeted marketing efforts. As the global demand for high-quality fruits continues to grow, Peru’s proactive approach to enhancing agricultural practices and expanding market reach positions it well for future growth in the fig export market. The ability to adapt to changing market dynamics will be crucial for sustaining this positive momentum in the coming years.
