EDEKA Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen is making strides in sustainability with a major solar energy initiative. The company is set to install photovoltaic systems across its logistics centers in Berbersdorf, Gochsheim, Marktredwitz, and the new facility in Hirschaid by June 2025. This ambitious project will see a total installed capacity of around 11,000 kWp, translating into an estimated annual production of 10.17 million kWh of green electricity.
The implementation of these solar systems will significantly impact EDEKA’s energy consumption. Approximately 85% of the generated power will be used directly on-site to meet the energy demands for refrigeration, lighting, and other operational needs. This shift aligns with EDEKA’s ongoing commitment to reducing primary energy consumption and enhancing energy efficiency across its markets and logistical operations.
Christian Thürk, EDEKA’s head of construction, highlights the scale of the project: “The solar panel installation will cover about 51,000 square meters, equivalent to seven football fields, and involve nearly 26,000 panels. This capacity could supply energy to over 2,000 households, demonstrating the project’s significant scale.” By adopting these solar solutions, EDEKA anticipates reducing its annual CO2 emissions by almost 4,000 tons.
The initiative not only advances EDEKA’s sustainability goals but also supports local economies. By partnering with Reichhard Elektrotechnik, a Kitzingen-based company, EDEKA is contributing to regional job security and supporting local businesses. Nicolas Reichhard, owner of Reichhard Elektrotechnik, emphasized the importance of decentralized energy generation and its role in a sustainable energy future. He noted, “This project underscores how businesses can use solar energy not just to lower energy costs but also to make substantial contributions to climate protection.”
The success of this large-scale solar project reflects the growing importance of photovoltaic systems for both large-scale operations and smaller businesses. As EDEKA continues to integrate renewable energy solutions, the company sets an example for others in the food retail sector and beyond, demonstrating the potential of solar power to drive sustainability and economic benefits.
EDEKA’s solar energy project marks a significant step toward sustainability in the logistics sector. By installing extensive photovoltaic systems, the company is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also supporting local businesses and setting a benchmark for renewable energy use in the industry. This initiative highlights the potential of solar power to contribute to both environmental goals and economic growth.
