In the bustling markets of Pengkalan Chepa, a remarkable transformation is taking place. The introduction of a food waste composting machine by the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) has yielded impressive results. As of Thursday, 21st of this month, the initiative, known as Compost @ Bazar, has collected 286 kilograms of food scraps during the Ramadan bazaars, producing 180.5 kilograms of organic fertilizer. This marks a significant increase of 130.5 kilograms compared to the previous Ramadan period.
Sharudin, the director of SWCorp, revealed that Compost @ Bazar is in its second year and has garnered collaboration from the Pengkalan Chepa Municipal Council and the local community. Placed at the Ramadan bazaar in Machang Square, the composting machine serves as a focal point for collecting kitchen waste from vendors and the public, subsequently distributing the produced organic fertilizer to farmers.
Speaking at the Machang Square Ramadan bazaar, Sharudin emphasized the importance of composting in reducing waste and promoting sustainability. He noted the remarkable increase in participation this year, with 286 kilograms of food scraps collected in just the first ten days, surpassing the total collected amount from the previous Ramadan. The convenience of the composting machine’s location near the market has encouraged greater involvement from vendors and the public, fostering awareness about the composting process.
Simultaneously, Sharudin highlighted a 2% decrease in food wastage this year, attributing it to the community’s growing engagement with composting and waste reduction practices.
