In the heart of Xã An Hòa Tây, the village of An Phú 2 is witnessing a green revolution. Bà Lê Thị Nhiên, a seasoned vegetable grower with over 35 years of experience, passionately tends to her 4,000m2 plot, cultivating a variety of vegetables such as purple onions, cilantro, spinach, and celery. She emphasizes the importance of meticulous care during the crops’ growth, especially in the face of unpredictable weather, to minimize potential damage.
Xã An Hòa Tây was once a significant hub for purple onion cultivation, boasting around 20 hectares dedicated to this crop. However, due to various factors, the cultivation area gradually dwindled over time. In 2024, approximately 140 households, concentrated in An Bình 1, An Phú 1, and An Phú 2, are anticipated to contribute to the local Tet market with crops like purple onions, cilantro, and bitter melons.
Ông Bùi Văn Thơ, a member of the organic cooperative An Nhiên, shares his experience of cultivating safe and organic vegetables for over five years. With a leased land of 1.5 hectares, he harvests nearly one ton of vegetables per month, generating a monthly profit of over 10 million VND. Thơ highlights the significance of soil preparation and land improvement in achieving disease-resistant crops and high yields.
The Quảng Tín Vegetables and Fruits Company, based in District 6, Ho Chi Minh City, plays a crucial role in supporting An Nhiên’s organic cooperative. The company purchases around 5 tons of vegetables per month at a contracted price of 18,000 VND/kg, including various greens like Chinese mustard, water spinach, and pok choy. This collaboration ensures a stable market for the cooperative’s members.
Nguyễn Hữu Nhân, Chairman of the Xã An Hòa Tây Farmers’ Association, emphasizes their commitment to supporting local vegetable growers. The association has partnered with Bình Dương Environmental Company to provide organic fertilizer, specifically Con Voi Bình Dương/LIO Thái. This initiative aims to enhance soil quality, improve crop resistance to pests and diseases, and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.
The success story of Xã An Hòa Tây showcases the resilience and innovation within the local vegetable farming community. By adopting sustainable practices, leveraging organic fertilizers, and fostering partnerships with supportive entities, farmers are not only ensuring a bountiful Tet harvest but also contributing to a healthier and more environmentally conscious agricultural sector.
