The Wisconsin yellow potato harvest has begun

The Wisconsin yellow potato harvest is underway at Alsum Farms in Arena, Wisconsin, with the first batches of potatoes being washed, graded and bagged for delivery to distribution centers and fresh market food retailers during the first full week of August.

“We’re having near-ideal weather this summer at Alsum Farms for the first harvest of yellow potatoes,” said Larry Alsum, President and CEO of Alsum Farms & Produce in Friesland, Wisconsin.

The harvest of the red potatoes will start shortly, shipping will start on August 8th.

Alsum Farms Russet potato harvest begins August 18 with Russet Caribou and Goldrush varieties. Both early season varieties will be the first new crop rossets to be harvested from the field and freshly washed, bagged and shipped to retail grocers in the Midwest and beyond. Additionally, new crops of Wisconsin organic Rosset, red and yellow potatoes will be available for shipment starting August 9th.

Alsum Farms grows, nurtures and harvests fresh potatoes that make their way onto Americans’ dinner tables through the Wisconsin Healthy Grown® program. This eco-friendly program has guided our agricultural sustainability practices for the past 25 years. Alsum Farms leverages the Healthy Grown Program’s regenerative farming approach to agriculture, which aims to strengthen ecosystems and community resilience. The 50 acres dedicated to restoring the prairie and pollinator habitat to cultivate a sustainably grown food supply is an example of Alsum Farms’ commitment to regenerative agriculture.

“We started farming in 1992 and helped establish the Wisconsin Healthy Grown Program in 1996,” says Larry Alsum, founding member of the Wisconsin Healthy Grown Program. Since then, the Healthy Grown program has guided our agricultural sustainability practices using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to efficiently manage inputs, implement conservation practices that improve biodiversity and ecosystem efforts through certification to the Healthy Grown standards.”

With Alsum Farms in full swing and the new crop of Wisconsin Healthy Grown Certified Alsum harvesting russet, red and yellow potatoes, now is an excellent time to offer fresh and sustainably grown potatoes to boost retail sales.

Alsum offers a wide range of pack options from 12 ounce to 50 pound packs; and in poly, mesh, paper or cardboard. The Company packs potatoes and onions under the Alsum Farms & Produce brand. Organic potatoes are packaged under the Alsum Organics and Rainbow Organics labels. Alsum also packs unclassified potatoes under our Family Favorite brand.
