Amidst the waning cherry season in Turkey, a new wave of anticipation is sweeping across the agricultural landscape as Turkish exporters gear up for the fig harvest. Yigit Gökyigit, representing Alanar, sheds light on the eagerly awaited Black Bursa fig season, renowned as Turkey’s most favored fig variety. The curtains are set to rise on this season’s fig extravaganza, with the first crop of Black Bursa figs projected to make their appearance in the third week of August.
A Bountiful Harvest on the Horizon
Gökyigit points out that while certain early fig varieties have already commenced their growth in early August, the iconic Turkish fig, the Black Bursa, stands as the flagship of fig production. With a mere three weeks left before the inauguration of the first crop, optimism runs high for a season that holds promise.
Alanar, a significant player not just in the export arena but also as a fig grower, has seen remarkable developments since its acquisition by Tekfen Holding in 2018. Under this new ownership, substantial investments have been funneled into novel plantings, particularly focusing on the coveted Black Bursa figs.
Gökyigit anticipates an impressive yield exceeding 2,000 tonnes of figs per year from the company’s proprietary orchards by 2028. This year, the projection hovers around 150-200 tonnes, solidifying Alanar’s status as the foremost black fig cultivator in Turkey. Expectations of exceptional quality loom large for this season, both within the boundaries of Alanar’s orchards and across the broader expanse of the Bursa region.
Resilience Against Nature’s Wrath
Unlike the prior year when certain pockets of Bursa suffered the onslaught of unfavorable weather mid-season, the fig orchards of Alanar and those scattered throughout the Bursa region have thus far remained unscathed by climatic adversities. Gökyigit remains optimistic about the current season, voicing hopes for picture-perfect weather that persists until the season’s culmination.
A Global Odyssey for Turkish Figs
For an extended duration, Alanar has been chiefly engaged with markets in Europe and East Asia, with ambitions to broaden their footprint to encompass over 20 countries in this campaign. Gökyigit paints a vibrant picture of Turkish figs embarking on a global journey, with destinations including but not limited to Germany, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
In a world where agricultural markets are shaped by multiple factors including climate, consumer preferences, and global trade dynamics, the Turkish fig industry demonstrates its resilience and adaptability. As Turkish figs traverse the world, they bring not just delectable flavors but also a tale of agricultural innovation and investment. As the Black Bursa season unfolds, all eyes are on Turkey’s fig orchards, where the promise of quality meets the reality of a bountiful harvest.
