Why carrot crops rot during storage: common reasons and what to do

If the harvested carrot crop is poorly stored and rotting, the first thing to do is to understand the reasons. The mistakes made should be taken into account for the next year. It is also desirable to determine which kind of rot has affected the root crops.

The main types of carrot rot
Carrots often affect mucosal bacteriosis. Usually it manifests itself exactly after the harvest is laid for storage, writes “Supersadovnik”. In this case, the insides of the root crop soften. Damaged carrots should be removed from storage as soon as possible, as the entire crop is affected very quickly.

Alternariasis is also called black rot because of the characteristic spots. Gradually, dense black rot develops in their place. The disease develops especially actively in conditions of high humidity.

A characteristic initial sign of fomosis is the appearance of dark spots with a brownish tinge or transverse stripes on the top of carrots. From there, they gradually spread over the entire surface of the root crop.

Rhizoctoniosis usually manifests itself in gray spots. Then they turn purple, gradually the carrots dry up.

With sclerotiniosis, root crops soften. On the affected areas, you can see a white plaque similar to cotton wool. The spread of the disease during the storage of carrots is promoted by high air temperature and humidity.

Causes of the appearance of rot on carrots and methods of prevention
Among the common reasons that root crops rot are improper harvesting and storage errors.
This:

  • picking carrots in rainy weather;
  • violation of harvest deadlines;
  • bookmark for storage of damaged fruits;
  • high temperature and high humidity when storing carrots.

In addition to observing all agricultural practices, it is important to harvest only on a dry day, preferably at a temperature of +4 … +6 ° C. Before storing, carrots are well dried and sorted, the damaged one is removed. The storage place is disinfected, for example, washed with a solution of potassium permanganate. Carrots should be stored at a temperature of 0 … +2 ° C. It is also important that the room is well ventilated.
